Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul revealed on his official Facebook page that he held separate phone discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim regarding the escalating tensions along the Thailand–Cambodia border. Both leaders listened to Thailand’s concerns about recent incidents and urged Thailand to maintain its commitment to peace in accordance with the Kuala Lumpur Declaration, signed on October 26, 2025.
Anutin said he had clearly conveyed Thailand’s position to both leaders. He expressed appreciation for their guidance and noted that their perspectives—as official witnesses to the declaration—would be considered alongside assessments from Thailand’s security agencies, particularly in light of Cambodia’s failure to comply with the agreed conditions.
He informed both leaders that international observers who inspected the incident site confirmed that the four landmines discovered were newly planted and illegally placed within Thai territory after the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration.
The Prime Minister announced that Thailand will suspend the implementation of all provisions under the declaration until Cambodia recognizes its violation of the agreement and formally apologizes to the Thai people for the landmine incident at Phu Makua, which severely injured Thai soldiers and led to the loss of limbs.
He reiterated that the Thai government holds the sovereign right to take any necessary measures to defend Thailand’s territorial integrity and ensure the safety of its citizens—just as any other nation would act to protect its people from foreign threats.
Prime Minister Anutin also urged both leaders, as witnesses to the declaration, to directly convey to the Cambodian Prime Minister that Cambodia must strictly and sincerely comply with the agreement. He emphasized that Cambodia must not impede Thailand’s landmine removal operations, for which the coordinates and operational areas have already been established.
He cautioned that Cambodia’s refusal to respect the declaration and its failure to take responsibility for the injuries inflicted on Thai soldiers would severely damage Thai public trust in the Cambodian government, making future peace efforts extremely difficult.
The Prime Minister reassured both leaders that Thailand remains committed to working with all nations to strengthen peace in the ASEAN region. However, he underscored that Thailand does not wish to maintain relations with any neighboring country that lacks sincerity or repeatedly threatens Thai sovereignty.
Prime Minister Anutin also expressed Thailand’s deep disappointment, recalling that Thailand had previously provided humanitarian assistance and refuge to Cambodian war refugees in good faith. He said it was therefore deeply regrettable that the Cambodian government would act in a manner hostile to Thailand and cause harm to Thai soldiers.
He further clarified that Thailand has no intention of invading Cambodia but stands ready to take all necessary steps to defend national sovereignty, protect Thai citizens, and uphold the country’s dignity.
Anutin also discussed trade negotiations with the U.S. President, expressing his desire for the U.S. to further reduce tariffs on Thailand. President Trump responded humorously, noting that Thailand already enjoys a relatively low rate of 19 percent. Prime Minister replied that if it were truly low, he would not have approached the President in South Korea to request an additional reduction, particularly given Thailand’s cooperation with the United States. According to the Prime Minister, President Trump said—paraphrased—“If you do the demining works quickly, I’ll consider chopping more percentage for you,” and indicated he would speak with Cambodia on the matter.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anwar stated that Malaysia would expedite the preparation of official documentation in its capacity as ASEAN Chair. This documentation aims to reaffirm the collective understanding and ensure that both Thailand and Cambodia strictly comply with the conditions of the declaration. Before concluding their calls, both leaders asked the Prime Minister to extend their goodwill to the people of Thailand.
The Prime Minister also apologized to the public for releasing the message slightly later than expected, explaining that he is currently on an official mission in the People’s Republic of China.
